MILNER EYEING TOP-THREE PL APPEARANCES RECORD

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has the top-three Premier League (PL) appearances record in sight after signing a contract extension at his Merseyside outfit.


James Milner would have been a free agent by the end of this month, but Liverpool have moved quickly to hand him a one-year contract renewal. His previous contract was set to expire on June 30. Liverpool manager JurgenKlopp was keen for Milner to extend his contract at the club by one more season at least. James Milner is one of Klopp’s lieutenant in the Liverpool dressing room. Retired England international Milner is the vice-captain at Liverpool, while current England international Jordan Henderson is the club captain.

Milner is fourth on the list of players with the most Premier League appearances. He has played on 588 occasions in the Premier League in the colours of teams such as Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool. Veteran England midfielderJames Milner is almost two dozens away from Frank Lampard in third place on the list of players with the most Premier League appearances.

Chelsea legend Lampard made 609 appearances in the Premier League before he retired. He played for three teams in the competition. Apart from West London giants Chelsea, Lampard also played for Manchester City and West Ham United. Milner needs to make at least 22 appearances in the new Premier League season to overtake Lampard on the list of players with the most Premier League appearances. Current Everton manager Lampard started his Premier League career at West Ham United before signing for London rivals Chelsea where he became a legend. He spent the final part of his Premier League career at Manchester City.

Welshman Ryan Giggs has 21 more appearances than Chelsea legend Lampard with 632 appearances, while record holder Gareth Barry has 21 more appearances than Giggs with 653 appearances.
