Jamie Carragher heaps praise on the current Liverpool squad

Liverpool legend-turned-pundit Jamie Carragher believes the Reds have probably the strongest squad in a long time. The Merseyside giants showed plenty of promise last term after they made all the way to the Champions League final, where they eventually lost to reigning champions Real Madrid.

Since then, Jurgen Klopp has spent nearly £200m to bolster the ranks with Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson and Carragher feels the team have a good chance of ending their long title drought, he told TalkSPORT: “It does look like a really top-end squad at the moment. Possibly as good as anything I was involved in and I was at Liverpool for 17 years. The squad that they have now and the strength they’re looking to gain is as good as anything I played in.”

Meanwhile, Carragher also spoke fondly about Dejan Lovren, who has previously been indicated as the weak link in the Reds defence. The Croatia international was hugely influential towards his nation’s run to the World Cup final last month and Carragher was quick to highlight the centre-back’s efforts, he added:“Lovren gets a lot of criticism from Liverpool fans and over his Liverpool career he has made mistakes in big games. But you’re talking about a centre-back who has made who has played in a Champions League final and a World Cup final over the last few months.”

Liverpool were recently in the United States of America for the second part of their pre-season tour and they managed to end the trip on a high after beating fierce rivals Manchester United by a comfortable 4-1 margin. In the next few days, the Reds are scheduled to entertain Napoli and Torino in preparation for the season opener against West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday 12. Liverpool did the double over the Hammers last term as they won both games by a 4-1 score.
